There are pros and cons to having your artwork shown on an online platform, especially when your 3D work was made with the intention of requiring public engagement that involves touch. I've made this video before the closing of the exhibition when Travelogic was shown for the first time last year. I never got down to editing it because there was no urgency to, but this time calls for it! So here's a short clip of how you can possible view and interact with the artist book. If you have seen this video and read this post, please let me know how you feel! I recreated the workspace from last year for some photos to be taken for the gallery's publicity materials for Printmakers' Assembly. The ones I had from last year were badly taken because I was in a rush to complete - almost 65 hours in the making of one book in the edition. Also, some processes were difficult to document on my own. It sure feels good to see my sketches and un bound panels up on the wall after some time of stagnation and not knowing how to proceed from the sudden loss of job and adjusting to a new routine, what they are calling a 'new normal'. I feel more positive looking at these again, that I actually was very productive. We're still in the midst of the circuit breaker and there will definitely be no physical show for Printmakers' Assembly. Could it be to the artists' advantage, in a sense that the audience will get treated to insights into the artists' work spaces and practices, as compared to a superficial presentation in a white cube.
I particularly love sharing processes, especially in art making and print making, an area where even a lot of artists don't know about. I sincerely look forward to more resource pages that will be archived by Printmaking institutes. With the circuit breaker comes many new initiatives and they are pretty positive I must say! Printmakers' Assembly will be launched live on www.stpi.com.sg on 21 May 2020 at 18:00 (SGT). Hope you'll check it out! Artist Books & Book Structures Workshop @ McNally School of Fine Arts, LASALLE College of the Arts10/21/2019 I was invited to do a workshop with the students of McNally School of Fine Arts at LASALLE College of the Arts this morning as part of their Text, Image and Sound project. In their 11th week now, this workshop is structured such that the students learn hands-on skills which they may perhaps get inspired and apply them to their work in progress. We started with getting familiarised with the various basic book structures from a simple 1 page zine, accordion-fold, to adhesive binding as well as sewn binding. Materials had also been prepared for all to attempt a 3-hole stab binding. I designed the next segment of the workshop to be more interactive and inclusive so that everyone would weld a needle and apply what they have learnt from earlier into practical use. The 52 pairs of hands combined efforts and we ended up creating a double concertina artist book that spans 5.4 m long!
This is probably the longest book I have ever made, and collaboratively as well. I must say that this has truly been an honour to have been part of this meaningful project. Achievement unlocked! This made my day!
Here's a glimpse of what I'll be showing at the One more folded sunset exhibition, which will open on the evening of 17 September 2019. I'm almost done with stitching... feel like I could add more but it has to stop at some point!
Travelogic is scheduled to show at One more folded sunset : The Winston Oh Travelogue Award's 20th Anniversary Exhibition at the Brother Joseph McNally Gallery at the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore, located in LASALLE College of the Arts.
Here's some work in progress after screen printing - embroidering!
Cutting paper stencils and printing away! Here's how it's done with an old card, instead of a squeegee. |
