It took me a while to sort out the stash of test prints vs rejects, monotypes and prints that are good but did not make it to the edition of 42. This marks the last workshop of the month of October!
The McNally School of Fine Arts Degree students made some marbled covers and attached them to their french link bound journals. This is part of a new initiative, The Analogue Room, that aims to be a community space for students and the LASALLE Alumni to create hand-crafted works as new ways of examining the environment and the world. On hindsight, I would break this workshop into two sessions in order to manage - everyone loved marbling so much they couldn't stop! Nonetheless, I had a great time! Thank you for having me today! Artist Books & Book Structures Workshop @ McNally School of Fine Arts, LASALLE College of the Arts10/21/2019 I was invited to do a workshop with the students of McNally School of Fine Arts at LASALLE College of the Arts this morning as part of their Text, Image and Sound project. In their 11th week now, this workshop is structured such that the students learn hands-on skills which they may perhaps get inspired and apply them to their work in progress. We started with getting familiarised with the various basic book structures from a simple 1 page zine, accordion-fold, to adhesive binding as well as sewn binding. Materials had also been prepared for all to attempt a 3-hole stab binding. I designed the next segment of the workshop to be more interactive and inclusive so that everyone would weld a needle and apply what they have learnt from earlier into practical use. The 52 pairs of hands combined efforts and we ended up creating a double concertina artist book that spans 5.4 m long!
This is probably the longest book I have ever made, and collaboratively as well. I must say that this has truly been an honour to have been part of this meaningful project. Achievement unlocked! This made my day!
A quick demo of a saddle-stitch variant binding with the chain stitch on a found collateral.
The chain stitch is a decorative stitch applied to the otherwise simple running stitch in binding loose sheets of papers together securely at the centrefold of a bunch of folios. Created for LASALLE McNally of Fine Arts Diploma Level 3 students as part of Project 2 : Text, Image & Sound session. A quick demo of stab binding with 3-holes and an origami paper cover (75mm x 150mm).
This is a very practical technique to bind loose sheets of papers together securely at the edge for a book of this size. Created for LASALLE McNally of Fine Arts Diploma Level 3 students as part of Project 2 : Text, Image & Sound session. As part of the October Open Studio sessions happening at The Gentlemen's Press letterpress studio, I conducted a Children's Day workshop. We had a lovely morning of easy marbling, which the kids created stab-bound books with. I really love how Juniper's cover turned out with her tiny handmade embellishments. HAPPY CHILDREN'S DAY!
