Staring At Death
(before they removed the oxygen mask)
Chinese Ink, Pen, Chalk on Murano(Haze) Paper
128.5 x 49.7 cm
2009
(Dedicated to Louis Lim, my beloved Grandpa, who left my side on 1 February 2009)
I call upon the Kites in the sky, for they now soar the heavens with him,
with strong wings despite the weak legs.
With his passing, these Kites will serve as reminiscence,
their presence a reminder that he’ll always be with me.
Staring At Death(before they removed the oxygen mask) is a painful mental image of his passing.
What I was concerned with coincides with the recent loss of my Grandpa, which happened during the genesis of the project.
What affected me most when I started the project was the constant image of my Grandpa lying on his deathbed. I stood beside him, watched him for a whole 5 hours before he slowly went before my eyes.
Everyone has faced or will face the loss of a loved one in time to come and it is part and parcel of life. With this project, I commemorate my Grandpa’s death as well as seek to connect with the viewer to remind them of their being and confront them to reflect on the people around, to love and appreciate them before it is too late.
Please check out the complementary book, Kites for My Grandpa.
